Step into the heart of New Zealand’s High Country for a multi-day trail running experience through working farmland, expansive valleys, and rugged backcountry terrain. This is more than just running, it’s a rare chance to immerse yourself in the rhythm of station life, stay in a remote lodge under the stars, and experience the land the way it has been shaped for generations. With a small group of trail seekers, you’ll trace animal tracks, 4WD trails, and historic routes.
We meet in central Queenstown and gather with our support crew to begin the adventure. After loading our bags into the 4WD (which will deliver them to the lodge), we take a short Gondola ride up and leave the buzz of town behind. The trail kicks off straight into high country terrain ~15km with a solid dose of elevation. But this is no race. We take it steady, soak up the views, and share a trailside lunch at a lookout spot that’ll leave you speechless. By late afternoon, we roll into our remote lodge, a backcountry hut-style stay with epic views, big skies, and a peaceful stillness you can feel in your bones. We settle in, then come together to cook, share stories, and watch the sky light up as day fades
After a relaxed brekkie, we head out into wild, open spaces. Today’s loop takes us deep into the backcountry about 18-21km of rolling trails, big valleys, and panoramic ridgelines. We keep a comfortable pace and stop to take it all in, this is what Traverse is all about. Lunch is enjoyed trail-side in a quiet spot far from the world. We return to the lodge late afternoon with time to unwind, have a relaxed stretch session before a hearty group BBQ under the stars. We will find the best spot to watch the sun fade and the stars come out.
One last adventure before we wrap. After breakfast, we gear up for our final stretch ~10km winding down through hidden valleys and tussock trails as we make our way back toward Arthurs Point just outside Queenstown. For those staying around, we will have a well earned drink in Queenstown and maybe a dip in the lake.
